Tazukuri are a small snack consisting of sweet and salty dried sardines, first consumed by indigenous Japanese people thousands of years ago. Today, the food is a staple of New Year's parties so as to remind everyone of the endless possibilities the new year brings. To many, it may be sweet, to others, it may be sour, and to some, it may end in you being eaten.
While immensely popular at New Year's celebrations, some dislike seeing Tazukuri throughout the rest of the year, as the food is an unpleasant reminder that while the new year can bring about positive change, it usually doesn't.
